MESS - Local Challenges on Mull and Iona
Annual costs of providing refuse collection and disposal services for some of Mull and Iona's remoter households and businesses are amongst the highest in Scotland, and likely to rise further. Recent surveys indicate that many residents are keen to be included in recycling programmes, but because it is not worth exporting some materials for recycling, 'MESS' is examining the cost effectiveness of local reprocessing arrangements to deal with elements of Mull and Iona's waste.
It is estimated that up to 50% or more of the estimated 3000 tonnes of material currently landfilled on Mull might be readily diverted through the provision of well supported new services and facilities.
